We know that no two students are alike. What if students were helped to identify their goals and given support to discover their next steps in reaching that goal? Instead of teachers giving a singular set of tasks, students could define or choose from a set of problems to work on that would help them attain mastery over a certain concept.
The curriculum would have to be broken down into these tasks, some of which could easily overlap, and the existing materials could be divided into reference and workbooks containing the superset of questions. Students could be guided to complete a set of questions based on the problems they identified and could add their own. Students would necessarily ask why they are doing something – which is not obvious to students when they are handed down books and homework.
